After a tree has been felled, the remaining stump can obstruct access, replanting, landscaping or future work. We provide stump grinding for domestic gardens, estates, commercial sites and development projects across Jersey, using machinery selected to suit the stump and the available access.

Why stump grinding is beneficial

Grinding removes the stump to an agreed depth without excavating the entire root plate. In many situations this is quicker and causes less disturbance to the surrounding ground than digging the stump out with an excavator.

  • Removes a trip hazard and releases usable space
  • Allows the area to be prepared for turf, planting, landscaping or a new surface
  • Limits unnecessary disturbance around nearby lawns, borders and structures
  • Can include exposed surface roots where access and ground conditions allow
  • Produces grindings that can be retained for reuse or removed as agreed

Difficult stumps and confined spaces

Stumps beside walls, within planted areas, between buildings or behind restricted access can often still be ground successfully. Before choosing the equipment, we check the route to the stump, including gate widths, gradients, ground conditions, nearby structures and the space available to work safely.

Compact machinery can reach many locations that larger equipment cannot. Where access is more open or the stump is substantial, higher capacity machinery can complete the work efficiently. If a stump cannot be approached safely, we explain the practical alternatives rather than forcing unsuitable equipment into the site.

Planning the depth and finish

The required grinding depth depends on what will happen next. Turf, new planting, paving and construction can each require a different specification. Underground services, walls, hard surfaces and buried obstructions are considered before work begins.

Stump grinding does not remove every root from the ground. The remaining roots are normally left to decay naturally. If the area is intended for foundations, drainage or deeper excavation, further groundworks may be required and this should be planned from the outset.

Contact Tree Matters with a photograph, approximate stump size and access details for an initial assessment.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Stump grinding can be included with tree removal or arranged as a separate service. The suitable depth and machine depend on access, nearby services and how the area will be used afterwards.
